There is another choice given to citizens of South Africa when voting.

Register to make sure your vote is counted. Then choose none of the worst options.

If you believe that no one can deliver on their electioneering promises, as has been demonstrated in the past decade.

Then SPOIL your vote!

Spoilt votes MUST be counted;

no house/land no vote means nothing when they come to adding up the votes. They still choose a winner.

If you and many amoung you believe no one can deliver, spoiling your vote could force a re-election... and immediate loss of jobs for those who don't deliver

I read the story about the toilets in a German glossy magazine with those pictures of the toilets with no walls in Khayelitsha - well here is the rest of the story.
Those shacks in K obviously do not have toilets in them because it is an informal settlement. So a few years ago the council decided to put toilets in for the people. This whole process was discussed with the community - the budget allowed them to build 1 toilet for every 5 families. After much discussion with the community it was decided that if council just put in the pipeworks and water and the actual toilet but didnt put up the walls around the toilet they could actually afford to provide 1 toilet for EACH family. The community agreed - walls are quick and easy for them to put up and each family gets its own toilet for free. Somewhere around this time we had local elections and in the Western Cape the ANC did not win - the DA did (historically a "white" party)
Altogether 1316 toilets were put. The residents were happy and most of them quickly put up walls around their toilets and made them part of their homes.
For political reasons 51 families did not enclose their toilets and those are the ones that landed up in newspapers around the world - it was a brilliant "look how badly the white people (DA) are treating the black people" statement.
After that very embarrassing story hit the world press the DA went and, at their own expense, put up walls around those last 51 toilets. The next day, the ANC youth league (our moronic friend Julius Malema and his cronies) went and tore those walls down again because an enclosed toilet has no news value for them.
And so the saga continues. The council has now gone and removed those 51 toilets - temporarily - they say that as soon as those people build the walls, council will put the toilets back (the infra structure is there now).
Needless to say, the ANC is pissed off because now their thunder has been stolen.
Of course, the rest of the world will never hear this part of the story - their belief that the whites in SA are still treating the blacks here like animals has just been re-confirmed.
I think that the journalist that printed that 5 page spread in the glossy magazine was totally irresponsible - surely he must have known (or at least had some idea of) the real story behind the "indignity of making poor black people crap out in the open" but as Nuka said, he was just trying to sell his story and as usual this story was much more interesting than the truth.
And once again South Africans have been embarrassed in the eyes of the world...

I leave at one of Khayelitsha's shacks in TR section, beleave me it's not a pretty site at that place especially in winter. Shacks get flooded plus the decompose that the munisipality does not collect end up in front of our door steps. You must also keep in mind that we have children, talking about me alone I have a very active Two year old baby girl. I found her the other day coming from work she was playing with her friends in a piled up dump of who knows what, stinking like a dead horse. There are no toilets only bucket toilets which 10 houses are forced to use about 2 of them. Plus there is a main road in front of this section in Khayelitsha where if you don't die of the desease you get from this place you won't be missed by the speeding cars.

I think that you are using a different defintion of community justice. What you call community justice, I would call 'mob justice'. Rather, to me, community justice implies communities coming together and setting up their own justice systems to deal with issues such as crimes. This could include meetings at the local level as well as punishments such as community service (which you suggested in the articel). True community justice is brought about through community institutions that promote dialogue and fairness in dealing with community issues.

I am really enjoying this website and i think i am going to give you

Yes I know Makhaza , I have been there , it is off the N1 and if I remember on the coast road toward Muizenberg , there was little there in 1999 , and very out of the way . Surly some arrangement , should have been made for this extra expense , getting to and from , Makhaza and site B , Let alone the bad condition's already there . It seems nothing of real difference , has changed in the last few years for those most effected by the unfairness of the government , whether the government be white or black . This is the most hurtful it seems , and must , effect the people. It only goes to prove that the peoples capitol , in the hands of the few , can easily turn sour .

I agree with you fully . I must however explain my sitting on the fence in your question section , I believe it is up to the people to work together , and build from within , however , having driven a truck picking up guys for work , and dropping them off in the evening at Khayelitsha for over a year I know only too well how the people are having to live . This is where I feel foreign governments have a moral responsibility , to pay back their investments or even part , which they profited from , under the former government .
I myself have not been back for seven years now , and cannot believe when I see that conditions have not improved in the slightest.
I wish you well with your struggle , and please keep me informed .
