Land grab continues

A land and housing activist on Wednesday said he was not surprised by two separate land grab incidents.

Dozens of people invaded a vacant piece of land outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape while another group occupied private land in KwaZulu-Natal.

Earlier in 2011, informal settlers clashed with City of Cape Town authorities when they tried to move onto a piece of property in Kraaifontein.

Activist, Mzonke Poni blamed governments failed land reform policies.

“As long as there is a lack of delivery in terms of housing, meaningful engagement, then this notion of occupying land is going to grow."

The Rural Development and Land Reform Department encouraged private land owners who fall victim to illegal occupations to involve the police.
