A Khayelitsha woman appeared in the Khayelitsha Regional Court Tuesday on two charges of murder for allegedly putting her newly born twins in a shopping bag and dumping them in a sewage dam.
The state alleges that on August 7, 2004, the woman, now 26, gave birth to female twins at the Karl Bremer Hospital in Tygerberg.
She was discharged with her twins on August, 21, 2004. It is alleged that she put the twins in a plastic shopping bag and threw them in a sewage dam in Khayelitsha.
The twins, who would be five years old this year, were found the following day and were declared dead through drowning, leading to the arrest of the woman on the same day.
It is not clear why the case has taken so long to come to trial. Questioned on the matter outside court Khayelitsha Regional Court senior prosecutor Grant Morgan said he was not familiar with the case as it had only recently been transferred from the district to the regional court.
In court yesterday, the woman, casually dressed in jeans and a blue tracksuit top, did not show any emotion.
Magistrate Raadiyah Wathen postponed the case until May 11, when the woman is expected to plead.
She was represented by Advocate Bongani Maxiti.
